Nairn's Gluten Free Cheese Oatcakes, 180g
A cheese oatcake for the gluten free table: 72% gluten free oats and 15% cheese, crumbly and savoury.
Nairn's Gluten Free Cheese Oatcakes, in brief.
Nairn's Gluten Free Cheese Oatcakes are made with 72% gluten free wholegrain oats and 15% cheese, so people avoiding gluten can have a cheesy oatcake. The label also lists palm fruit oil, sea salt and raising agents.
They are rich and savoury, with 16g of protein and 7g of fibre per 100g on the label data. One oatcake is 9g.
Oats are naturally free of wheat, but ordinary oats are usually grown and milled alongside wheat and barley. Gluten free oats are kept apart from them, which is what makes an oatcake like this possible for people avoiding gluten. Nairn's uses them here, 72% of the recipe, with 15% cheese for flavour.
The result is a proper cheese oatcake, crumbly and savoury, rather than a compromise. It suits a gluten free cheese board, a lunchbox or a snack with an apple.

Taste and texture
Expect toasted oats, a cheesy savour and a crumbly texture. The label data gives 484 kcal, 25g of fat and 2.55g of salt per 100g, with only 0.9g of sugars.
What is in it
Gluten free wholegrain oats (72%), cheese (15%) (milk), sustainable palm fruit oil, sea salt and raising agents (sodium bicarbonate, ammonium bicarbonate). The label declares milk. Some people who avoid gluten also react to avenin, a protein in oats: if that applies to you, oatcakes are not suitable.
Serving it
Put them on a gluten free cheese board with a chutney, or eat them with celery and grapes. They are also good with tomato soup.

The story behind Nairn's
Nairn's story begins in 1896, when John and Sarah Nairn opened their bakery in Strathaven, a market town in Lanarkshire. Today Nairn's bakes in Edinburgh, and oats are the whole point: oatcakes rough and fine, cheese oatcakes, seeded and organic oatcakes, and a gluten free range. The oatcake is the Scottish cracker, mostly wholegrain oats with a little oil and salt, baked into a nutty, crumbly round that loves strong cheese; Nairn's Rough Oatcakes list 90% wholegrain oats. The gluten free oatcakes, crackers and flatbreads are made with gluten free oats, and Nairn's own label notes that some people who avoid gluten also react to avenin, a protein in oats.
Packaging: a 180g pack. Once the pack is open, fold it tightly closed or tip the crackers into an airtight tin, and keep them somewhere cool and dry. Damp air is what softens a cracker. The pack gives the best before date.
