Peter's Yard Fig & Spelt Sourdough Crackers, 100g
Fig and spelt in a thin sourdough cracker: the fruit is baked in, so it flatters a blue cheese like a spoon of chutney.
Peter's Yard Fig & Spelt Sourdough Crackers, in brief.
Peter's Yard Fig and Spelt Sourdough Crackers are thin crispbreads made with spelt wheat flour, milk, fig pieces, sourdough and rye flour, sweetened with honey and seasoned with sea salt. The pack carries a vegetarian claim.
The fig gives these a gentle fruitiness (8.8g of sugars per 100g on the label data), which makes them a natural match for blue cheese and aged Cheddar.
Fruit and cheese is the oldest pairing on the board, and these crackers bake the fruit in. Spelt, an ancient wheat with a nutty flavour, leads the recipe, with milk, fig pieces, a sourdough and rye flour, a little honey and sea salt.
The result is thin and crisp like a Peter's Yard crispbread, but sweeter and fruitier, so it does the job of a fig chutney on the side of the plate.

The story behind Peter's Yard
Peter's Yard is a crispbread brand inspired by Peter Ljungquist, a baker near Ystad in southern Sweden, and started by two English friends, Ian and Wendy. Its crispbreads take the Swedish idea of a thin, dry, long keeping bread and make it with a rye sourdough, milk and a little honey, which gives a lightly tangy, crackly crispbread that flatters cheese. The Original Sourdough Crispbread lists milk, rye flour, wheat flour, a 12% rye sourdough, wholemeal wheat flour, honey and salt, with only 2.8g of fat per 100g on the label data. The range now includes flavoured sourdough crackers such as fig and spelt and rosemary and sea salt, sturdier flatbreads plain and seeded, and a selection box for gifting.
Packaging: a 100g pack. Once the pack is open, fold it tightly closed or tip the crackers into an airtight tin, and keep them somewhere cool and dry. Damp air is what softens a cracker. The pack gives the best before date.
