About these crackers

Crosta & Mollica Classic Torinesi Breadsticks, in brief.

Crosta & Mollica Classic Torinesi are Italian style breadsticks made with wheat flour, extra virgin olive oil (7%), malted barley flour, salt and yeast. Torinesi takes its name from Turin, the city most associated with grissini.

They are long, dry and crunchy, made for the table: with antipasti, soup, dips or a board of cured meats and cheese. The label gives a portion as 60g, half the pack.

Breadsticks are the Italian answer to the cracker. A yeasted dough is rolled into long thin sticks and baked until dry right through, so they snap cleanly and keep well. These Torinesi use a short list of ingredients, with extra virgin olive oil making up 7% of the recipe and malted barley flour for colour and flavour.

They work where a flat cracker is awkward. Wrap them with Parma ham, stand them in a glass on the table, or dip them in soup and hummus. On a cheese board they add height and a different crunch.

Taste and texture

Expect a clean, bready flavour with olive oil in the background and a noticeable savouriness: salt is 2.1g per 100g. Fat is 6.5g per 100g, with only 0.4g saturates, because the fat is olive oil. The texture is dry and crunchy all the way through.

What is in it

Wheat flour, extra virgin olive oil (7%), malted barley flour, salt and yeast. The label declares wheat and barley (gluten).

Serving it

Wrap each stick with a slice of prosciutto, serve them with soft cheeses such as burrata or ricotta, or put them in a glass next to a bowl of soup. They are also good with olive tapenade and hummus.

Brand

The story behind Crosta & Mollica

Crosta & Mollica was founded in 2009 as a British brand of Italian food; the name means crust and crumb in Italian. Its founder, James Orr, built the range around Italian classics, from sourdough pizza to biscotti and aperitivo snacks, and the company is a certified B Corporation, listed in the B Lab directory. On our cracker shelf, its Classic Torinesi Breadsticks are made with wheat flour, 7% extra virgin olive oil, malted barley flour, salt and yeast: long, dry and crunchy, for antipasti, soup and the cheese board.

Packaging: a 120g pack. Once the pack is open, fold it tightly closed or tip the crackers into an airtight tin, and keep them somewhere cool and dry. Damp air is what softens a cracker. The pack gives the best before date.
