Nairn's Cheese Oatcakes, 200g
Scottish oatcakes with the cheese baked in: 71% wholegrain oats and 15% cheese, rich and savoury on their own.
Nairn's Cheese Oatcakes, in brief.
Nairn's Cheese Oatcakes are Scottish oatcakes made with 71% wholegrain oats and 15% cheese, with palm fruit oil, sea salt and sodium bicarbonate. The label data gives Scotland as the place of manufacture, and the pack carries a vegetarian claim.
Rich and savoury, with 7.2g of fibre and 13.6g of protein per 100g, they are an oatcake that brings its own cheese. The label gives one oatcake as 8.25g.
An oatcake is the Scottish cracker: mostly oats, baked into a crumbly, nutty round. Nairn's cheese version keeps the oats at the heart of it, 71% wholegrain oats, and adds 15% cheese to the dough, so every oatcake is savoury on its own.
The ingredient list is short and plain. Palm fruit oil, sea salt and a little sodium bicarbonate complete the recipe, and the cheese gives both flavour and richness.

Taste and texture
Expect a nutty, toasted oat flavour with a strong cheesy savour and a crumbly, slightly rough texture. The label data gives 26.6g of fat and 2.75g of salt per 100g, so they are rich and salty; sugars are 0.6g per 100g.
What is in it
Wholegrain oats (71%), cheese (15%) (milk), sustainable palm fruit oil, sea salt and raising agent (sodium bicarbonate). The label declares oats (gluten) and milk, and carries a vegetarian claim. These are not the gluten free Nairn's oatcakes.
Serving it
Eat them as they are with an apple, or top with chutney, ham or tomato. They suit soup, especially a Scotch broth, and a simple lunch with celery and grapes.

The story behind Nairn's
Nairn's story begins in 1896, when John and Sarah Nairn opened their bakery in Strathaven, a market town in Lanarkshire. Today Nairn's bakes in Edinburgh, and oats are the whole point: oatcakes rough and fine, cheese oatcakes, seeded and organic oatcakes, and a gluten free range. The oatcake is the Scottish cracker, mostly wholegrain oats with a little oil and salt, baked into a nutty, crumbly round that loves strong cheese; Nairn's Rough Oatcakes list 90% wholegrain oats. The gluten free oatcakes, crackers and flatbreads are made with gluten free oats, and Nairn's own label notes that some people who avoid gluten also react to avenin, a protein in oats.
Packaging: a 200g pack. Once the pack is open, fold it tightly closed or tip the crackers into an airtight tin, and keep them somewhere cool and dry. Damp air is what softens a cracker. The pack gives the best before date.
