Schar Crispbread, 150g
A gluten free crispbread with the Crossed Grain symbol: rice and maize, very lean and light.
Schar Crispbread, in brief.
Schär Crispbread is a gluten free crispbread made from rice flour, maize flour, sugar and salt, and the label carries the Crossed Grain symbol. The pack also carries vegan claims and a no palm oil claim.
It is very lean, 1.7g of fat per 100g on the label data, and a slice is 7g. The label says it may contain soya.
Crispbread is usually made from rye, which contains gluten, so a gluten free crispbread needs a different grain. Schär uses rice flour and maize flour, with a little sugar and salt, and bakes them into a light, crisp slice.
The Crossed Grain symbol on the pack is the recognised mark for gluten free food in the UK, which makes this a reliable choice for a gluten free cheese board or lunch.

The story behind Schar
Schär's roots go back to 1922, when Dr Anton Schär, a doctor from Innsbruck, and Gottfried Untertrifaller launched their first product in South Tyrol, a fortified semolina to fight child malnutrition after the First World War. In 1979 Ulrich Ladurner took over the Dr. Schär brand, and since its relaunch in 1981 it has specialised in gluten free food. Schär's crispbread swaps the rye of a traditional crispbread for rice and maize flours, and the pack carries the Crossed Grain symbol and a vegan claim: a lean, light crispbread for the gluten free cheese board.
Packaging: a 150g pack. Once the pack is open, fold it tightly closed or tip the crackers into an airtight tin, and keep them somewhere cool and dry. Damp air is what softens a cracker. The pack gives the best before date.
