The story behind Nairn's
Nairn's story begins in 1896, when John and Sarah Nairn opened their bakery in Strathaven, a market town in Lanarkshire. Today Nairn's bakes in Edinburgh, and oats are the whole point: oatcakes rough and fine, cheese oatcakes, seeded and organic oatcakes, and a gluten free range. The oatcake is the Scottish cracker, mostly wholegrain oats with a little oil and salt, baked into a nutty, crumbly round that loves strong cheese; Nairn's Rough Oatcakes list 90% wholegrain oats. The gluten free oatcakes, crackers and flatbreads are made with gluten free oats, and Nairn's own label notes that some people who avoid gluten also react to avenin, a protein in oats.
