About these crackers

Jacob's Krackawheat Crackers, in brief.

Jacob's Krackawheat are wheat and rye crackers: flour (59%) and ryemeal (31%) make up most of the recipe, with a little lactic acid for tang. The pack carries vegan and vegetarian claims.

At 6.5g of fibre per 100g on the label data, with 1g of sugars, they are hearty and savoury, a good everyday cracker for cheese and lunches. The label gives one cracker as 8g.

Krackawheat is a cracker with rye in it, and it shows. Ryemeal makes up almost a third of the recipe (31%), which gives a deeper, earthier flavour and a more substantial bite than a plain wheat cracker. Lactic acid adds a light, sourdough style tang.

The rest is simple: fortified wheat flour, palm oil, wheat gluten, salt, sodium bicarbonate and natural flavourings. It is a cracker for people who like their cheese with something to bite against.

Taste and texture

Expect an earthy, lightly tangy rye flavour and a crisp, dense bite. The label data gives 446 kcal, 17.6g of fat and 1.7g of salt per 100g.

What is in it

Flour (59%) (wheat flour, calcium, iron, niacin, thiamin), ryemeal (31%), palm oil, wheat gluten, salt, raising agent (sodium bicarbonate), lactic acid and natural flavourings. The label declares wheat and rye (gluten), says it may also contain sesame seeds, and carries vegan and vegetarian claims.

Serving it

Rye loves strong cheese: mature Cheddar, Stilton and aged Gouda. It also suits smoked fish, pickled herring and a slice of ham with mustard.

Brand

The story behind Jacob's

Jacob's began with W. and R. Jacob's steam biscuit factory in Dublin in 1853, and it was making cream crackers from around 1885: the plain, crisp, blistered square raised with yeast that is still the everyday cracker of British kitchens. In 1914 Jacob's opened its first English factory at Aintree, Liverpool, which Wikipedia records as the main UK producer of Jacob's products today. The range has grown far beyond the cream cracker. On our shelf you will find Cheddars and Mini Cheddars, the rich, flaky Cornish Wafers, Krackawheat with 31% ryemeal, Choice Grain, the potato based Bites, TUC, flatbreads, crispbreads and the Biscuits for Cheese selection box.

Packaging: a 230g pack. Once the pack is open, fold it tightly closed or tip the crackers into an airtight tin, and keep them somewhere cool and dry. Damp air is what softens a cracker. The pack gives the best before date.
